Taking a Look at Hegemonic Assumptions - 1237 Words

Firstly hegemonic assumptions what are they, if the words are taken individually and researched in a dictionary hegemonic stands to mean ‘having hegemony, or dominance: the ruling partys hegemonic control of all facets of society.’ (Dictionary.reference.com, 2014), and assumption stands to mean ‘something taken for granted; a supposition: a correct assumption.’ (Dictionary.reference.com, 2014). From these definitions one could be led to believe that hegemonic assumptions are when a person takes for granted their dominance of a situation. Hegemonic assumptions actually mean assumptions that we think are in our own best interests but actually work against us in the long run (Brookfield, 1998). A few common examples of this in teaching are the perfect 10 that we should strive for perfect evaluations in everything we do and that a good teacher always gets a perfect evaluation, that teaching is a vocation it is a calling in life and if you do not give all your time over to teaching then you are not a good teacher, that the answer must be out there somewhere that someone somewhere has previously solved your problem if you can find them or find their book you will know your solution, and finally that teacher meet everyone’s needs and if you are not meeting the needs of everyone then you are not a good teacher. Although reading these they may sound like positives when we try to apply them in real life they work against us.
